Moonlit Thoughts

Pillow book

I'm reading a lovely substack called The Tokyo Hermit. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a gentle, thoughtful Japanese perspective on life.

One article is about writing one sentence (or two at the most) each night before you go to bed. It has to be handwritten. It does not have to be a literal event from your day, simple an observation, thought or it can be a literal thing.

These sentences are written and collected for the whole year. Don't re- read your words until the end of each season (approximately every 3 months). This will give you a chance to pause and reflect on how you have grown and changed in that time.

I've started doing this, and it's a lot harder than I thought it would be.

Here are some of the things I've written:

"Strange how quickly a busy house can become so quiet." "My cat likes to sleep on my side of the bed." "It's dark in my head when I'm alone."

And so, it is difficult, but I want to keep trying this. I don't know why, but I feel compelled to (at the moment).

Give it a try, you might enjoy it.
